Think and Read: Problem and Solution

As you read, think about the problems the theme park team faced. How did the team solve these problems?

Vroom, vroom! Your go-kart kicks to life, and you get ready to race. Competitors like Toad and Yoshi fly past you, knocking into each other like bowling balls. Everyone’s goal? To win the Golden Cup!

Dodging slippery banana peels and gushing waterfalls, you race through the course at top speed. You toss a green turtle shell at an enemy. Wham! They spin to the side, and you zoom past.

You steer through the course like a pro, picking up golden coins as you get closer to the end. You’re going to win!

This scene may sound familiar. You’re probably imagining playing a video game from Mario Kart, right? But this is no video game. This is real life!

You’re actually sitting in a go-kart, steering it along a racetrack. And with the help of 3-D glasses, you see a Mario Kart course move in front of your eyes.

Welcome to Super Nintendo World.

Let’s go back to the year 1985. A video game company called Nintendo has just released a game called Super Mario Bros. It stars two brothers who are plumbers. Their names are Mario and Luigi.

The brothers travel through Mushroom Kingdom—battling enemies and avoiding obstacles—to save Princess Peach. She’s been kidnapped by a giant evil turtle named Bowser.

Super Mario Bros. became a huge hit. Players loved exploring the colorful world and discovering its secrets. Since then, Nintendo has released more than 20 games in the Super Mario series. Mario has also appeared in hundreds of other games, like the incredibly popular Mario Kart series.

Getting to Work

Mario’s fame gave the workers at Universal Studios Hollywood in California an idea. What if there were an amusement park that brought Mario’s world to life?

“Mario is known by hundreds of millions of people who have grown up playing in those game worlds,” says Jon Corfino. He helped design the park.

In 2016, Corfino and his team of engineers got to work. Fans loved Mario and knew the games inside and out. So Corfino’s team had to make the theme park look, sound, and feel just like Mario’s world. But how?

First up was bringing guests into the park. Mario moves around the game world through a series of green tubes. So engineers built an enormous green tube at the front for guests to travel through—just like in the game!

In 1985 a company called Nintendo made a video game. It was called Super Mario Bros. It was a huge hit. Since then, Mario has appeared in hundreds of video games, including the Mario Kart series. Recently, workers at Universal Studios Hollywood in California had an idea. What if a theme park brought Mario’s world to life?

Jon Corfino works at the park. In 2016, Corfino and his team of engineers got to work. They wanted the park to look and sound just like Mario’s world. But how?

Mario moves around the game world through green tubes. So engineers built a green tube at the front of the park. Next they built a copy of Princess Peach’s castle from Super Mario 64. The tube and castle look just like the ones from the games.

Color and Excitement

Next up was Princess Peach’s castle. The team built a replica of the castle from the game Super Mario 64. It has the same tiles on the ground and the same artwork on the walls. The same music that plays in the game pumps through speakers in the park.

But it would take more than that to make the park feel real. Mario games are crowded, busy, and bursting with activity. Spiky red turtle shells zip past you. Giant blocks with angry faces slam to the ground in front of you. And piranha plants with sharp jaws can pop up and grab you at any moment.

The Super Nintendo World engineers had to create the same burst of color, motion, and excitement in the park. Guests walk past giant bricks and red turtle shells as they walk around and explore. And look out! Many paths are lined with snapping plants.

Best of all? Life-sized Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach characters meet guests with phrases like “It’s-a-nice to meet you!” as they pose for pictures.

Mario games are also full of red turtle shells, giant blocks, and piranha plants with sharp jaws. The engineers added those to the theme park too.

Next the engineers thought about what guests would do. Mario always has an objective in the games. So the engineers gave guests one too. Bowser’s wicked son, Bowser Jr., has stolen a golden mushroom. Guests need to collect at least three golden keys to win it back. How? By winning games!

One of the most exciting games is Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge. Guests steer cars through a virtual race. Special 3-D glasses let them see characters, a race course, and objects from the video game.

Engineers tested each part of the park to make sure everything worked. Then in 2023, Super Nintendo World opened. The park was a hit! Millions have visited.

Corfino thinks the park has been important for people of all ages. “They’re so happy,” he says!

Now the engineers puzzled over the next question: What would guests do once they came in?

Mario always has an objective in the games. He saves Princess Peach, collects stolen power stars, or defeats enemies like Shadow Mario. Along the way, Mario racks up golden coins and special power-up boosts.

So engineers designed games for guests to win prizes like golden coins and keys. They also came up with an objective: Bowser’s wicked son, Bowser Jr., has stolen the prized golden mushroom. Guests need to collect at least three golden keys to get it back. How? By winning games!

One of the most exciting games is Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge. Guests steer a car through a virtual race! Special 3-D glasses let them see images of characters and objects from Mario Kart and throw objects at opponents—just like the video game!

Now engineers needed to figure out how people would keep track of their prizes. The engineers made a high-tech wristband called a Power-Up Band. Guests can tap their Power-Up Bands all across the park to play games and collect prizes. With enough keys, they can enter the final challenge in Bowser Jr.’s hideout!

For All Ages

For All Ages

The plans were ready, and the park was built. Before opening day, engineers tested each part of Super Nintendo World to make sure everything worked. Were the mouths on the piranha plants opening and closing? Check. Were the Power-Up Bands counting gold coins and gold keys correctly? Check.

If something wasn’t working, the team made changes and tested again. Corfino test rode Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge more than 200 times!

In 2023, Super Nintendo World opened to the public. The theme park was a hit! Since then, millions have visited the park to see their favorite characters and worlds come to life. It’s been so successful that another location is opening in Orlando, Florida, this year.

Corfino says seeing the video games transform into a theme park has been meaningful to people of all ages.

“I’ve seen 5-year-old kids and 65-year-old adults drop to their knees and start crying,” Corfino says. “They’re so happy!”

2. Close Reading

Reading and Unpacking the Text

  • Read the story as a class or have students follow along as they listen to the Read-Aloud.
  • Stop and use the Pause and Think questions at the end of each section for a comprehension check. Encourage students to go back to the text to support their answers.

  • Project or assign the Close-Reading and Critical-Thinking Questions. (Alternatively, use all or part of the Learning Journey Slide Deck.)

Close-Reading Questions

  • Read the first section. How do visitors to Super Nintendo World move around and see a Mario Kart course? Visitors to Super Nintendo World move around by sitting on a go-kart and steering it along a racetrack. They wear 3-D glasses to see a Mario Kart course move before their eyes. (main idea and supporting details)
  • Read “Incredibly Popular.” Why was 1985 an important year for Nintendo video games? The year 1985 was an important year for Nintendo video games because that’s when Nintendo released Super Mario Bros. The game was a hit and there are now more than 20 games in the Super Mario series. (key detail)
  • Read “Getting to Work.” How is the way that guests enter the park similar to how Mario moves through the game world? Guests enter the park through a huge green tube at the entrance. That’s similar to how Mario moves through the game world because he travels through a series of green tubes. (compare and contrast))
  • Read “Color and Excitement.” How did engineers make the theme park look and feel like the world of Super Mario video games? The park includes spiky red turtle shells that zip past visitors, giant blocks with angry faces, and piranha plants with sharp jaws. These all look like parts of the video games. (key details)
  • Read “The Golden Mushroom.” What did engineers create that allowed visitors to keep track of their prizes? Engineers created Power-Up Bands for visitors to wear on their wrists. Guests can tap these high-tech wristbands all across the park to play games and collect prizes. (problem and solution)
  • Read “For All Ages.” Why do you think Jon Corfino rode Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge more than 200 times? Answers will vary. Sample response: I think that Jon Corfino rode Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge more than 200 times because he wanted to be sure that the ride worked every time. He didn’t want anything bad to happen when guests came to the park to use the ride. (inference)

Critical-Thinking Questions (10 minutes)

  • In your opinion, what was the most difficult part of building Super Nintendo World? Use details from the text in your answer. Answers will vary. Sample response: I think the hardest part of building Super Nintendo World was matching the excitement and activity of the video games. Engineers had to make the theme park colorful and busy. They had to create the same characters and items from the games, like piranha plants and giant angry blocks. It probably took a lot of time and creativity to do this. (supporting an opinion, problem and solution)
  • What would you like to do during a visit to Super Nintendo World? Use details from the story in your answer. Answers may vary. (connecting to the text)

3. Skill Building and Writing

Featured Skill: Problem and Solution

  • Distribute our Problem and Solution Skill Builder and have students complete it in class or for homework.
  • Discuss the writing assignment in the Think and Write box on page 9.

Differentiate and Customize
For Striving Readers

Have students read the Easier-level article in pairs or small groups. As they read, they should create two lists: one with details describing what problems the engineers needed to solve, and the other with details about what they did to solve the problems. You can pause after each section to add any relevant details to each list. Then students can use their lists to respond to the Think and Write prompt on page 9.

For Multilingual Learners

This article contains domain-specific terms that might be unfamiliar to your ELL students.  Before students read the article, review the definitions of the following terms together: competitors, plumbers, obstacles, engineers, replica, objective, and transform. You might show the vocabulary slideshow to reinforce the meaning of the terms.

For Advanced Readers

Ask students to imagine they are one of the engineers designing Super Nintendo World. Have them come up with a new idea that will take a part of Super Mario games and turn it into a part of the theme park. The new idea can be part of the decoration, a game, a ride, or anything else! Students should write a description of their new idea or draw a picture of it, and then share the idea with the class.
